The Ulala Cooperative of Cochabamba, Bolivia is managed by Instituto de Formación Femenina Integral (IFFI), a non-profit organization which has been working since 1981 to combat the social, economic, and cultural equality issues that many Bolivian women face. The cooperative “promotes active citizenship and empowerment of women's organizations, through training processes, [and]generation of information and knowledge.”
It is both a family and a workplace, allowing women to express themselves as artists, businesswomen, and equal citizens of their communities. Without the work opportunities created by the cooperative, its members would have to walk long distances with their children to stand in the sun all day selling fruit for a poor wage.
As is the case in most of the world, Bolivia’s local businesses are struggling to compete with the mass marketed products that are cheaply made in foreign countries. Ulala works to preserve the cultural heritage of Bolivia, while also creating viable and successful business models.
