Each bead in this eco-friendly necklace is handmade from discarded bottles. The bottles are cleaned, broken, then melted in a furnace. The bead is then spun from the melted glass on a metal rod and handcrafted by Kenyan women into this simple and lovely 2-strand necklace with silver-plated triangle accents and silver-tone giriama beads. About 18" long with a 2" beaded extension chain. We have matching bracelets.
Comes with a jewelry pouch made from recycled, traditional African fabrics.
Artist's Story:
This one-of-a kind piece was made by one of 21 men and women working in Nairobi. In keeping with fair trade practices, each employee is paid a very fair monthly salary in addition to receiving between 5% and 15% of the wholesale price of each item they make. This way, they receive both a regular monthly salary and income throughout the month. Because of this, the workers earn 5 times more in wages than the national average in Kenya. Most medical costs for the workers and their families are also covered and they are provided a daily lunch.
